What is PM KUSUM Scheme who is this for?
The Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan (PM-KUSUM) is a Government of India initiative launched in March 2019 to promote solar energy adoption in agriculture. Its objectives include reducing farmers’ dependence on diesel, lowering irrigation costs, enhancing income through renewable energy, and contributing to India’s clean energy goals
Key Components of PM-KUSUM
- Component A: Installation of decentralized, grid-connected solar power plants (500 kW to 2 MW) on barren or cultivable land. Farmers or groups can set up these plants and sell surplus electricity to DISCOMs under a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA).
Component B: Deployment of standalone solar-powered agricultural pumps, aiming to install 20 lakh pumps to replace diesel-based systems.
Component C: Solarization of existing grid-connected agricultural pumps, targeting 15 lakh units to reduce grid electricity consumption
· Financial Assistance: Farmers receive up to 60% subsidy from the government and an additional 30% loan assistance, requiring only a 10% contribution from the farmer.
· Reduced Energy Costs: Transitioning to solar energy decreases reliance on diesel and grid electricity, leading to significant savings
· Additional Income: Under Component A, farmers can earn by selling excess solar power to DISCOMs.
Environmental Impact: Adoption of solar energy reduces carbon emissions and promotes sustainable farming practices.
